About this Project

While it is predicted that the world’s biodiversity will be reduced by two-thirds by 2020, in our modern world it is becoming more popular to keep wild animals as pets in often unfavorable conditions. In this regard the Wildlife Rescue Centre aims to rescue injured, orphaned, mistreated and displaced local species and put them under the care of specialized staff at the centre.

The project stared in 2015, when the urgent issue arose to rescue animals from the abandoned Gyumri Zoo. Three lions and two bears were rescued and settled at the WRC in the beginning of 2016.

Throughout the year, the rescue centre offers a range of educational activities to the wide public (mostly targeting schools) through prior booking to educate visitors about wild nature, the environment and habitats, and the animals to whom the landscape is home.

Location

The Rescue Centre is located in the Ararat province (marz) in the Caucasus Wildlife Refuge in the vicinity of Khosrov state reserve. The Caucasus Wildlife Refuge is the first private reserve in Armenia, where the variety of landscapes, rich biodiversity and picturesque view make it one of the most unique places in Armenia to visit.

FPWC has established an eco-center there and has implemented several research and conservation projects in order to protect wild animals and their habitats.

The site hosts several globally and locally threatened mammal and bird species such as the Caucasian Leopard, Brown Bear, Bezoar Goat, Armenian Mouflon, Caucasian Lynx, Eurasian Black Griffon, and Bearded Vultures.

The nearest villages are Urtsadzor, Dashtakar, Shaghap and Lanjanist.

Your contribution

  •  Assisting in wildlife rescue and releasing of animals into the wild
  •  Assisting and running the database of the centre
  •  Fundraising and grant writing (?)
  •  Compiling news about the WRC

Travel Highlights

Being located in the central part of Armenia, you will have a chance to travel around and explore diverse landscapes and habitats of the country. Once a week you will have an opportunity to visit Yerevan, the capital of Armenia.

Noravank is a 13th-century Armenian monastery, located 66 km from the Urtsadzor Eco Centre, in a narrow gorge made by the Amaghu River, near the town of Yeghegnadzor, Armenia. The gorge is known for its tall, sheer, brick-red cliffs, directly across from the monastery. The monastery is best known for its two-story Surb Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God) church. In the 13th–14th centuries the monastery became a residence of Syunik’s bishops and, consequently, a major religious centre. It later became a cultural centre of Armenia closely connected with many of the local seats of learning, especially with Gladzor’s famed university and library.
